About
Len wrote The Dolphin in late August in Northern New Hampshire. He lost his Dad at 15, but he feels that the song was a gift from him. His Dad had taken him fishing in Florida when Len was a boy and his Dad was recovering from a heart attack. The experience of catching The Dolphin, a fish also known as Dorado or Mahi Mahi, was an experience he would never forget. As the fish lay on the deck dying, the vivid colors that flashed all over it’s body faded to grey. He recognized that the spirit of the fish and the Luminous colors it sported were connected. Many years later this song was inspired by the experience…
Lyrics
THE DOLPHIN
Where the amberjack and the bluefish swim
The porpoise laughs, he laughs a seaweed grin
The Dolphin sails the open sea
He’s lilac and sea green
Emerald shades of pastel hues, of blue and gold,
The Dolphin flies, he flies to taste the sky
Try to see him through my eyes
Try to see him sail the sky.
The fisherman, with his hook and line,
Casts from his ship, into the salty brine
The Dolphin sails the open sea
He takes the bait wholeheartedly
And now the Dolphin’s tied to me
With rainbow sides of blue and gold
The Dolphin flies, he tries to reach the sky
The hook and line bring home the war
He’s not the swiftest anymore
As sunset slips away
And gold returns to grey
Like fading twilight skies
The Dolphin slowly dies
